DESCRIPTION:Ragtime Dance Workshop – The Peabody and The Cakewalk Walk\n\nThis is a workshop in two halves.\nThe first hour(ish) we will introduce you to the Peabody.\nThe Peabody was basically a unique\, jaunty type fast fox-trot\, done to ragtime music. It is based more around a dance position (called the “English”) which lead to some unique steps or patterns. It came onto the ballroom around 1915.\nThis is an energetic dance but can be danced at half-time!\nThe Pea body will be taught by Erica and guest teacher Rob McElvanney!\n\n************************************************************\n\nThe second hour (ish) will be dedicated to the Cakewalk.\n\nWe will take you through the steps\, which will end up into a full blown routine.\n\nThe Cakewalk is one of the lesser known “grandparents” of Lindy Hop\, alongside the Charleston\, Black Bottom\, the Breakaway and others. As early as the 1860s\, Black slaves recounted how they would promenade around\, imitating and parodying the dance forms they saw their owners doing in their ballrooms. These were called “cakewalks” because the couple deemed the best dancers were awarded a cake — which led to the phrase “taking the cake” or winning the prize.\n\nThe Cakewalk will be taught by Erica and Cliff!\n\nOn completion of the workshop you will have time for a social dance to practice what you have learnt.\nBoth workshops are partner dancing but not so much lead and follow! So no restrictions on attending!\n\n£18 per person.\n\nFree Tea/coffee and biscuits will be available. DESCRIPTION:There are two parts to this afternoon –\n Part 1 – 1pm to 4pm – Learn the Tranky Doo – £15 \nThis is a 3-hour work shop (with breaks for coffee!!) \nThis  workshop is aimed at anyone wanting to learn this fabulous routine. \n  Part 2 – 4pm to 7pm – Afternoon Dance £7 \nPrice for both £20.00\n\nThere is a licensed bar from 4pm to 7pm and Free Tea/Coffee \nA great wooden dance floor – maximum numbers 60 and mostly FREE parking. \nGuest Teacher – Ollie Parham – Cardiff Lindy Hoppers \nOllie is based in Bristol and teaches with his lovely wife Helen.  They run classes and events in and around the Cardiff area.  They have also been seen on many occasions performing across the country and at numerous social dances around Bristol Gloucester and Cardiff. \n\nWhat is the Tranky Doo?     \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzY1SLL9xOw\nThe Tranky Doo is even more fun than it sounds! \nA silly series of mostly jazz steps\, this line dance was choreographed by Pepsi Bethel in the Savoy Ballroom during the 1940’s. Lindy hoppers will often spontaneously begin this routine and\, much like the Shim Sham\, individuals will join in once they recognize its beginning moves.  \nTraditionally the song was danced to Erskine Hawkins Tuxedo Junction\, a mellow tune\, but the routine’s versatility allows it to be danced to a number of more upbeat songs such as Ella Fitzgerald’s Dipsy Doodle. DESCRIPTION:Swingout Swindon presents:\nBeginners Aerials Workshop and Social Dance \nGuest Teachers – Double UK Lindy Hop Champions: Graeme and Ann \nGraeme & Ann live in Bath and learnt to Lindy Hop in the 1990’s at the start of the Swing revival. Among their teachers were the Jiving Lindy Hoppers and the late\, great Frankie Manning. They have achieved national success and are twice U.K. Lindy Hop Champions. They have done a lot of T.V.\, video and film work including; BBC’s ‘Turn Back Time -The High Street’ – London Weekend’s ‘Barrymore Show’ – the title sequence for ‘Josie’ on Channel 5 – featured Lindy dancers in BBC’s ‘String of Pearls’~ a history of swing music – even a comedy dance routine with the late Rod Hull and Emu.\n\nThey were the choreographers for an animated jitterbug sequence in Aardman Animation’s major film release\, “CHICKEN RUN” \n\n\nGraeme and Ann work full time teaching and performing all over the country with their dance group ‘Hoppin’ Mad’ and currently run classes in Bristol and Bath. They have taught and performed in New York\, San Francisco\, Las Vegas\, Sydney\, Denmark\, Ireland and New Zealand.
